August Sperry

Chicago, Illinois

Location: Chicago, Illinois

Years of Operation: c.1865-1869, c.1872-1875

Successor: Blauer & Sperry

Identification: Cases attributed to August Sperry feature the words "Chicago" and "Coin" embossed within pointed or rounded banners. No direct evidence supports this attribution, but similar styles, marking patterns, and process of elimination provides Mr. Sperry as the best attribution for these marks.

August Sperry was isted as "Watch Case Maker" in 1865 Chicago city directory at 117 Lake St. In the 1867 and 1869 city directories, Sperry is listed as a "jeweler."

By 1869, Sperry had partnered with Frederick Blauer to make cases under the "Blauer & Sperry" name at 159 Lake St. and 34-36 La Salle St. Known surviving examples are marked "Chicago B&S." This parnership carried on until at least 1872. During this time, "Baluer & Sperry" were the only case makers listed in the Chicago city directories available (1869, 1870, 1871, 1875). By 1874, Blauer and Sperry are both listed as independent case makers again.

In the early 1870s after the partnership was dissolved, Sperry pressumably continued to manufacture watch cases. By the 1875 Chicago City Directory, only Frederick Blauer was listed as a watch case maker. Some cases marked "Chicago" and "Coin" has consistent markings and patterns as the known examples of the B&S cases. For this reason, these cases have been attributed to Sperry (but may also be from a period of time when Blauer & Sperry were still active).

Crossman reported that Sperry was recruited by the California Watch Company (Cornell) in 1875 to manufacture gold and silver cases in San Francisco. A small number of cases were produced before the company failed. Surviving examples are known to feature the marking "C.W.Co. Sanf'co. Cal." These cases feature marking styles and designs consistent with known suviving examples from the Blauer & Sperry company.

By 1884, August Sperry was employed as a watch case maker at the Waltham factory (1884,1886,1888,1890,1893 Waltham Directory, 1894 Boston City Directory, 1893-1894 Jewelers' Weekly Directory). In 1895, Sperry moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania (1895 Waltham/Watertown Directory).
