I• I I i:6Sz.J -...+IT IS IN HER +-+-- WILLIAM PENN IN ARMOR (AFTER SCHOFF'S S'rEEt. ENGRAVING FROM THE ORIGINAL). WILLIAM PENN WOULD RECOGNIZE THE Finest Product of the Manufacturing of Pennsylvania during the past ~rwo Hundred Years. ----------------------------------+ Skill and Enterprise rTHE patron saint of Pennsylvania is William Penn.-. and this, indeed, with propriety, since to no other man does she owe so great a debt of gratitude. No grander character has ever been within her borders, be it for a day or for a life-time. American history boasts no nobler name than his; the history of England has no more glowing page than that which tells of his heroic struggle with the powers of darkness in Church and State; and the record of the World's progress is brighter for the chapter which he made possible in the founding of his Free Com- monwealth. And yet-revered as is his memory-his character and work are, in themselves and in their abiding influence, far too little known or appreciated in these days and in this land of political and religious freedom, which has been in so great degree an heritage from himself. In the realm of history, 2..sin that of nature, distance is an element essential to the proper estimate of any figure of colossal proportions. As William Penn stands apart from us to-day, with two centuries of unparalleled progress of the race between, the \Vorld is more and more impressed with the greatness of the man to whom alone, in modern times, is given the title of Fournier, and with the goodness of him who, upon the dark background of an evil age, "shines resplendent in the lustre of unsullied virtue." The historic picture of \Villiam Penn at the age of twenty-two, which is given 011 the first page of this circular, is a very fine reproduction of the most precious canvas in Philadelphia -per.haps the most precious in the United States. This painting, which was more than a half century old before Washington was born. hangs in the commodious rooms of the His- torical Society of Pennsylvania, at 820 Spruce Street, Philadelphia. Though a portrait from life, it is an ideal face of such rare human type that the thought of sex hardly suggests itself- a face of such winning goodness, suggesting b.rgc: possibilities, as might be painted for Joan of Arc dad in armor, or for John the Beloved, "the youngest and most woman-like of all the disciples." It grows upon one strangely, as he looks often and earnestly into it, and we turn to it for the hundredth time ·with the feeling that it is his mother's face no less than his own that looks out upon us from the silent page. And what a mothell"he must have had! It is a face that has a future, one of the rarest pictured faces we have ever seen-one that could grow to that which is given on a succeeding page, now to be seen at Independence Hall, on Chest- nut Street, Philadelphia, and said to have been painted at the age of fifty-two years, but never to certain caricatures that have ~ Iona oassed current as "vVilliam Penn." Of the two more recent biographi;s; by Janney and by Dixon, the latter regards William Penn as a great historical character, and his Holy Experiment, in the founding of Pennsyl- vania, as "one of the most orecious heirlooms of time;" while the former traces his enlight- ened policy as a legislator t·o his religions principles, and attributes far more influence to the ministry of George Fox than to the counsels of Algernon Sidney. They are books to be read. The Bi-Centenrrlal Edition of "vVilliam Penn: Sketches and Papers," just published in paper covers, at. Fifty Cents per copy, by J. B. Lippincott & Co., is a book of absorbing interest. This valuable compilation, which is issu.edjn good type and on good paper, selects matter of greatest interest from each of his four best-known biographers, Dixon, Janney, Weems, and Clarkson.. While condensing as much as seemed necessary to bring it within given space- 208 large octavo double-column pages-it aims to g1ve the style and spirit of each writer, the sequence of chapters having due regard to the order of time. William Penn himself is rep• resented in certain letters of most interest to the American public, especially those written in 1682 to his Wife and Children, and to the So:::ietyof Free Traders. The Frame of Govern- ment of Pennsylvania, with its noble preface, and the laws accompanying, not elsewhere accessible to the ordinary reader, and which indeed but few men of our day, even among lawyers, have ever seen, are here given in full. The original text of the Charter of Pennsyl- vania is also found here, with its unique and varied spelling, as compared with the four original elaborate parchments in the office of the Secretary of State of Pennsylvania, at Har- risburg. This original parchment is, with a single exception, the most precious State docu- ment in America. Here, also, are" Penn's Maxims," a work little known outside the Society of Friends, and the second part of " No Cross, No Crown," the garnered experience of the bec;t and '.visest men and women of Greece and Rome, of the early Christian era, and of more modem times-a mine of wealth to the thoughtful. The book is "a contribution to the Bi- Centennial Era, in the hope that it may aid in arousing more intelligent interest in the char- ~cter, .and in disseminating broader knowledge of the life-work and lasting influence, of the 1~lustnous Founde~ of Pennsylvania." Eneow~agQ thQ ~ennsylv~ni~ ~ateh l°Wilnu{aetw~e@) THE Great State of Pennsylvania ranks with the First in the Union in Population and Resources, and in the importance of her i: Agricultural, Mining, and Manufacturing interests. Her Manufactures, keeping pace with her other interests, have grown steadily, until they are now on the most extensive scale and of the most varied character. To crown them all, the Manufacture of the Finest Grades of Watches, in all their Perfection of Detail, Delicacy of Finish, and Wonderful Accuracy of Adjustment, is already a tri- umphant success at the City of Lancaster. Dealers and Experts, at home and abroad, pronounce them the Best American Watches yet produced. The Lancaster Watch Company is resolved to take the lead in the manufacture of Fine Watches. They think that every Pennsylvanian wi11have good reason to be proud of his native State in her Watch Manufacture, and they ask the People of Pennsyl- vania to second their great effort to add this New and Valuable Industry to the noble list for which our old Keystone State is already famous. This can be done by inquiring for the Lancaster vVatch; by insisting resolutely upon seeing it before purchasing a Watch; and, if it is equally satisfactory-as the Company have no doubt it will be-by buying it in preference to any Watch manufactured in ,,New England, in the West, or in Europe. Let Pennsylvanians stand by Pennsylvania, and we will build up here a Great Industry that, in its more complete development, may secure to our State, in this interest, a world-wide reputation for the next Hundred Years.
