Research Notes

According to Rockford Serial Lists, the Grade 82 was produced in eight distinct runs. While the serial blocks are fairly consistent, both "Plain" and "Nickel" finish designations are represented. Observations have confirmed both nickel and two-tone movements within the Grade 82 serial blocks. Standard movements are marked "R.W.Co. - Rockford, Ill. - 17 J - Adjusted" in a chiseled serif style. The 1899 A.C. Becken catalog mentions that either Grade No. 62 or No. 82 can be purchased with a "nickel gilt finish" for $18.00, a $2.70 premium over the standard nickel finish. The 1896 A.C. Becken catalog describes the movement as "adjusted to heat, cold and position" and features a "sunk second dial" with "red marginal figures." However, not all movements are fitted with this dial. A number of rare private label movements within the sixth run have been recorded as marked "22 Jewels." Multiple movements consistent with the Grade 82 traits have been observed in the last run of Grade 93 movements [440,001-441,000], drastically different than the 9-Jewel Gilt Grade 93.

Grade 82 and 83 Note:
Rockford Serial Lists designate the serial block 417501-418000 as Grade 83 with 17 Jewels. Other Grade 83 runs are listed as featuring 15 Jewels, and various observations have supported this. #417681 has been verified as marked "17 J" with features more consistent with the Grade 82. If the entire run was actually finished as Grade 82, production estimates would need to be revised accordingly.
