Dial Details | Thomas Aspinwall Davis was the 10th mayor of Boston, Massachusetts who originally worked as a jeweler before entering into the world of politics. Davis was born on December 11, 1798 in Brookline, MA and began working in a jewelry shop at age 14. At the age of 22, Davis became a business partner with a man by the name of Thomas N. Morong which lasted roughly 5 years. Starting in 1825, Davis went into business for himself and was listed in the Boston Directory as a jeweler and watchmaker up until 1834. In 1838 Davis partnered with Julius Aboyneau Palmer and Josiah Giles Batchelder to form Davis, Palmer & Co. In 1844, Davis ran for election, and on February 27, 1845 he was elected as the 10th mayor of Boston and was the first Boston mayor who was a member of the Native American Party, which had split from the Whigs the previous year. This party only lasted for around 16 years before being dissolved in 1860. During his time in office, Davis became very ill. He tendered his resignation on October 6, 1845 due to his poor health. Surprisingly, his resignation was not accepted and thus he died in office on November 22, 1845 at the young age of 46. He is currently buried at the Walnut Street Cemetery in Brookline, Massachusetts. The watch in question has a case that is stamped with Birmingham hallmarks for 1832, which coincides with Davis' time working for himself. The "B.K" marking on the case belongs to a casemaker by the name of Benjamin Kirby, who is listed as having worked out of both Coventry and Birmingham, England. |
