Note: I have a question: How can a pocket watch that's
in a hunter case and has roman numerals be
considered a railroad watch? Did the requirements
change over time?
Curator Response: Yes. Requirements changed over time and each railroad and/or inspector maintained different specifications as well. This particular watch was manufactured c.1891, prior to the push for industry-wide standards. At the time, it would have qualified for railroad service on the majority of American railroads.
