Dial Signing Name | Cyrus N. Gibbs (private label) |
Dial Details | Cyrus Nelson Gibbs (1846-1922) worked from circa 1865 to 1881 as a jeweler and watchmaker in Framingham MA with branch stores in South Framingham and Ashland MA. He sold his business to another Massachusetts jeweler by the name George F. Bemis (who also has private label watches) in 1881. As for the movement signature, Nobscot refers to the village of Nobscot in Framingham (which is strangely located in North Framingham and not South Framingham?). The name comes from the Nipmuc Indian name "Penobscot" (meaning “Place of the Falling Rock”) and was later shortened to "Nobscot." As for South Framingham, it became the commercial center of the town with the advent of the railroad in the 1880s and eventually came to house Dennison Manufacturing, which was founded in 1844 as a jewelry and watch box manufacturing company by Aaron Dennison of the Waltham Watch Company. |
