Dial Details Hiram W. Smith (1820 – 1898) was trained as a watchmaker in his native New Hampshire. By 1852, he had established a watch and watch material business in Boston, MA. Using imported parts, beginning in 1859, he manufactured watches under his own name. The business was short-lived, and it is thought he produced less than 100 watches. The earliest watches that he produced were numbered on both the movement and the dial. This dial happens to be from the 7th watch that Smith produced. This dial also has "Waltham Mass" stamped into the back of it.
