Dial Details The town of Pawtucket, Massachusetts is not a typo on this watch. This town actually existed in Massachusetts for 34 years before the land was given to Rhode Island. The first Pawtucket to be incorporated was when Rehoboth, MA gave up their land in 1828 to form Pawtucket, MA. This new township would last for 34 years until on March 1, 1862 Pawtucket, Massachusetts was incorporated into the state of Rhode Island. Even after this assimilation, the Rhode Island towns were still seen as separate, and were named West and East Pawtucket due to the Seekonk River running between the two cities. Finally in 1886, the two Rhode Island towns merged and the city of Pawtucket, Rhode Island was formed.

Marcus L. Dean (DOB 8/1/1822) was born in Rehoboth, MA. Unlike many names on watches, this gentleman was not a watchmaker or jeweler, but a baker. Dean opened up the Pawtucket Baking Company in the 1840s and expanded his business in 1860 with the construction of new buildings on Water Street. The company ran into trouble in the 1870s and due to problems in his personal life and his business, Dean committed suicide by jumping off a bridge to his death on April 17, 1875. As a note: the day prior to Dean's suicide, an older woman who was living at Dean's residence committed suicide by hanging. Nothing is mentioned of the connection between these two, but her death undoubtably played a significant part in Dean's actions. Marcus L. Dean was 52 years old at the time of his death. He is buried at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, Rhode Island.
