Dial Signing Name A. Stowell & Co.
Dial Details Alexander Stowell was born in 1818 in Medford, Massachusetts. Although he was known as a quiet and unassuming man, he would go on to run a successful jewelry business in Boston for decades. His business was listed in the 1850 city directory at 76 Hanover Street, and later at 141 Hanover in the 1855 edition. During that time Stowell lived in Somerville, MA and later in 1860 lived in Charlestown, MA. In 1862 he opened his business at 24 Winter Street in Boston, (this would remain the location of his business for over 40 years). In 1865, Stowell teamed up with another jeweler by the name of Parkman Tyler Davis in Boston, MA and formed A. STOWELL & Co. By the year 1870, Stowell partnered with his son, Eugene Alexander Stowell as well as another man by the name of Charles S. Cook. In 1890 Alexander Stowell retired from business and in 1893 he and his family moved out to California, where he became interested in real estate as an investment. Stowell passed away in 1895 in Pasadena, California. He was taken back east and was buried in the town where he was born at Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford, Massachusetts. One of the most interesting features on his private label watches is the unusual font that was chosen for the dial and the movement.
