Dial Details | S. & J. Myers were two brothers by the names of Samuel and Jacob Myers who worked as jewelers in the Boston area. Both brothers were born in England and became naturalized U.S. citizens. Their business is listed at 16 Hanover Street in the 1850s, then is listed as being at 90 Washington Street in 1865, and at 388 Washington Street in the 1870s. On October 10, 1875 S. & J. Myers submitted a letter to the House of Representatives urging that a stamp-duty be imposed on all gold and silver manufactured in the United States which would denote the quality by affixing the carat on gold items and a uniform standard for silver items. The Myers brothers stated that their business could not compete with more dishonest businesses that lied about the quality of their precious metal items that they sold. Unfortunately for S. & J. Myers, no system was adopted at this time. This idea would finally pass into law through the National Gold and Silver Stamping Act of 1906. The business of S. & J. Myers appears to have failed around 1880, where one newspaper article states that the business had chronic failures and that the brothers had odd methods for transacting business. What the brothers did after their business failed is unknown. Samuel died on Christmas day in 1895 and his brother Jacob passed away on January 31, 1910. Both brothers are buried at Temple Mishkan Tefila Memorial Park in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. |
