Pan-American Pocket Watch

Pan-American pocket watches were manufactured by the Seth Thomas Watch Company in approximately 1900 to commemorate the Pan-American Exposition of 1901 held in Buffalo New York, U.S.A. from May 1, 1901 through November 2, 1901. The 18-size Pan-American pocket watch is a 7-jewel private label watch in Seth Thomas Model 10, with an open-face orientation, and in Model 11, with a hunting case orientation. Their manufacturer assigned grade is “Century”.

“Century U.S.A.” Model 10 and the Model 11 pocket watches were manufactured by Seth Thomas for Sears, Roebuck & Company and were sold in the Sears catalog to commemorate the turn of the 20th century. Model 10 and Model 11 are considered “Century” grade. None of the Model 10 or Model 11 pocket watches display individual serial numbers on the top plate.

Seth Thomas Pan-American pocket watch dials may be found with several signature variations. Some of the original dials bear the signature “P-A” for Pan-American. Others bear the signature “Philad’a Watch C. Co. Riverside N.J. U.S.A.”, and others are signed only “P.W.C.Co.”. At this time there is no information available publicly to document details of who contracted Seth Thomas to manufacture the Pan-American pocket watches and dials. Evidence indicates that Philadelphia Watch Case Company played a role in this.

President of the United States, William McKinley, was assassinated at the Pan-American Exposition’s Temple of Music on September 6, 1901. Then Vice-President, Theodore Roosevelt, became President upon William McKinley’s death on September 14, 1901.
