Case Details | The case has two engravings that appear to be serial numbers the first is quite clear and is listed in the information above. the second is W 9-4-26. This one is less clear, but does not appear to be Karat Weight as described in some of the research documentation I've discovered thus far. The best description I can provide at this time (being somewhat uneducated on the matter) is that the case is a beaded filigree design with a grapevine motif (grape leaves at the bottom by the hinge, then vines with grapes on either side framing the center image. The image at the center is of a shore line, picturing a small house on a hillside, overlooking a body of water (lake/sea) with a small sailboat on the water. Manufacturer info is on the inside of the Dust Cover. in addition to the stamped company info and serial number, is a hand engraved number "CJ 780" Not sure what the significance of this is... possibly information from the person who made it...??? Research on Essex states that the “Columbia” cases were 14k gold filled, guaranteed for 20 yrs. |
Dial Material | Enamel |
Dial Type | Single-Sunk |
Dial Style | Roman |
Dial Signing Name | American Waltham Watch Co. |
Dial Details | The dial is a commemorative design honoring the Spanish American War. It is in in pristine condition, no cracks or chips. The hand painted flag motif shows the American Flag (left), and the the Cuban Flag (right). My Great Grandfather served in the US Army during this time, then later in China during the Boxer Rebellion. There are also hand painted symbols below the flags, but I have no clue as to their meaning. Adjacent to these, on the right, seems to be the word Daisy, or Daley. There was a "face artist" named Dewey around this time, and he was known for other American flag motifs, but the lettering (while not completely clear, is clear enough to not be Dewey). |
