Case Details | This is a Elgin Crusader. They all have the same insane case. To see this case is quite impressive. Its a solid white gold case. Sz12, 17j, 6 Adjustment, GM Wheeler movement. I have the original case and the original box that came with this watch. As you can see the original sale price was 100.00. That was a lot of money in 1926. I have seen this same watch and movements dating to the 1930's. After the great depression had started. I can imagine the production at that time would have been reduced significantly. All that I have seen are that same movement. The case only differ with the addition of personalized initials. The entail style for the most part was the same. Which leads me to believe that this was possibly a factory process. You would special order. I have also see a few that were presentation watches that were hand engraved. I don't know if you would call this a engraved case, etching process, or stamped. For this discussion I will call it a engraving. The engraving is elaborate and amazing. The back cover in the photo is a elaborate engraving. The dust cover is polished with some decorative engraving and the words Elgin and Crusader. I purchased the watch 3-17-06 for 245.00. In 2015 this watch is easily selling for over $500.00. This watch has no service tinker marks. And currently the screws shows no signs of ever being worked on. However I see the need to perform a serviced. I display many of my watches in a case, with the cover open, so I can see, and share my collection. What I have noticed about displaying watches in this way. The nickel plates will patina like silver. It takes longer, but sure enough it will start to get a darkness to the otherwise bright and shinny plates. I have purchased many watches over the years. Lots of Silveroid, Silverine, Coin Silver, Sterling Silver, etc. When I receive them, and the out side of the cases are patina, but open the covers. The insides appear to be protected, and are in many cases pristine and shinny. So for what its worth. I collect these watches for my enjoyment, to look at, maintain and share. Till it's time to pass them on to the next. And I expect the patina to works it way to the nickel plates. I thought I would mention these observation. |
