Case Details James Boss patented the first "gold-filled" watch-case in 1859. This patent passed through other owners until it was acquired by the Keystone Watch Case Co. prior to 1900.

When both the Keystone & Boss trademarks appear this indicates the case is constructed to the "Boss" gold-filled patent specifications. The "crown" mounted on the "scales" indicates a (14k gold-filled) 25 year warranty and without the "crown" a (10k gold-filled) 20 year warranty. The warranty period for the 10k and 14k may have varied somewhat over the years.

When the "Keystone" trademark appears by its self, it's still gold-filled but not made to the "Boss" gold-filled specification.
