In 1891, Fred A. Gooding filed a suit against the Illinois Watch Company for ingringing on the patent secured by James B. Gooding in 1874 [The Jewelers' Circular, December 9, 1891]. According to reports, upon Gooding's death in 1887, the patent was sold to Fred A. Gooding. However, the Illinois Watch Company was using the patented process for balance manufacturing without permission. | |
