Curator Response: Thanks for the report. This is a tricky one. This serial number falls at the end of a block of known "John C. Dueber" grade movements. The Grade 63 is essentially the unnamed grade of the "John C. Dueber." Because #958171 represents a private label, it could reasonably be argued both ways. It is not marked as a "John C. Dueber," so it is not a "John C. Dueber" grade and is more appropriately classified as a Grade 63 vs. it falls at the end of a known block of "John C. Dueber" movements, so it should be classified as a "John C. Dueber" even though it is a private label. Either way, the specifications are the same, and the only effect of deciding one way or the other is the influence on estimated production. The more interesting question is whether this one should be considered "railroad grade." At the time, both the "John C. Dueber" and No. 63 grades were only adjusted to temperature. The current lookup table incorrectly indicates an adjustment to positions, but that was only applied to the 21-Jewel grade introduced much later. Thus, it would not have qualified on most American railroads at the time of production. I am planning an overhaul of the Hampden lookup engine soon, and this distinction will be updated at that time.
