Star in Flag

U.S. Trademark #46757, issued on October 3, 1905 to the Dueber Watch Case Mfg. Co., features a star inside a pennant flag accompanied with the word "Golden." For this reason, the similar "Star in Flag" mark is typically attributed to the Dueber Watch Case Company. The trademark application specifies that the mark is to be used on "cases for timekeeping instruments." The Hampden Watch Company, the manufacturing operation owned by John C. Dueber, is also known to have used grade markings with stars inside flags. However, the trademark documentation specifies the word "Golden" as a unique trait of the mark. While registered trademarks can still protect minor alterations to the mark, this should at least cause hesitation in concluding the "Star in Flag" mark is from the Dueber factory.

At least one surviving case featuring the "Star in Flag" is also marked with "Warranted - 25 Years - F.W.C.Co." on the back dust cap and "Fahys 14K No 1." on the front dust cap. This example is not marked with a serial number for style comparison. This could indicate the "Star in Flag" mark should be attributed to the Fahys Watch Case Company instead of Dueber. However, the "Fahys 14K No.1" mark is rather crude and appears inconsistent with the company markings used by the factory at this time, indicating a possible fraudulent marking.
