Research Notes

Only a single run of 200 Grade 40 movements is included in the official Rockford Serial Lists. The first 100 movements are marked "15 R" and feature a nickel finish. From the second batch of 100 movements, #241902 and #241972 have been verified as a two-tone movement marked "17 R". #241962 have been verified as marked "17 R" with a nickel finish. #241949 has been reported as marked "17 R." These traits are inconsistent with the earlier Grade 40 movements featuring 15 jewels. While Rockford serial lists designate these 200 movements as Grade 40, proper classification for the "17 R" movements is unclear. Earlier serial numbers in ambiguous runs have been reported with characteristics of the Grade 40, possibly indicating more were manufactured. There are no known advertisements for the Grade 40 movement.
