Research Notes
According to Rockford Serial Lists, the Grade 84 was produced in 12 distinct runs. The 1896 A.C. Becken catalog describes the movement as "finely adjusted," likely indicating adjustment to temperature and positions. Standard movements are marked "R.W.Co. - Rockford Ill" in a blackletter ("Old English") style with "Adjusted" in sans-serif caps at the perimeter of the barrel bridge. The Model 8 hunting-style movement features two-tone plates, described as "damaskeened in gold on nickel." By 1899, the Grade 84 was no longer offered in the annual A.C. Becken catalog. The majority of Grade 84 movements are fitted with the "Type 5" micrometric regulator. Observations from the last run have been recorded with both a plain regulator and the "Type 6" micrometric regulator. Various Grade 84 movements have also been recorded with private label names.
Anomalies:
[Run 9: 329,201-329,700]
#329557: Verified as Marked "17 Jewels" and "Adjusted" with special two-tone pattern. The "17 Jewels" marking does not appear like to other Rockford grades with the jewel counts marked. The movement is fitted with a private label dial, "Duncan G. Currie - Manistique, Mich."
[Run 11: 344,001-345,000]
#344362: Verified as Marked "R.W.Co. - Rockford Ill. - 21 Jewels - Adjusted" with raised gold settings. The two-tone damaskeening pattern does not match other known Grade 84 examples [JH]. #344346: Verified as "standard" Grade 84 with 15 jewels and expected two-tone pattern [JH].
