SOUTH BEND WATCH MATERIAL
SOUTH BEND WATCH CO. SOUTH BEND. INDIANA
JANUARY 1, 1917
Planof Catalog
THISmaterial catalog is presented after carefully considering the various methods of cataloging material. The method used enables us to list our material with a complete description. This gives you the
most convenient and positive method for the selection of material.
The material in this catalog is classified according to watch models. All models of the same watch size are grouped together. The first models appearing in the catalog a r e the 0 size, then 6 size, 12 size, 16 size and 18 size. In order that a jeweler may identify the model of a particular watch without leafing through the catalog, illustrations for all models are shown on page a. A comparison can then readily be made.
The models a r e numbered in consecutive order according to the date of model. The oldest model of each watch size commences with model number one. Open Face and Hunting styles are designated by grade numbers; odd numbers always representing Open Face movements and even numbers, Hunting movements.
The material for each model is listed in alphabetical order. Upon the first page of listed material for any given model will be found illustrations of bridges and lower plates for that model.
Each model is sub‐divided into the various grades in which it is manu‐ factured. A l l South Bend Watches have the grade numbers engraved upon the bridges, with the exception of a very few of the oldest watches. These numbers are engraved on the bridges for the purpose of identifying the grades and are entirely independnt of the serial numbers.
The grades for each model will be found at the head of the price columns. Prices for material will appear in the column headed by the grade number in which material is used. The dozen price for each part appears in heavy type directly over the piece price which is printed in light type.
The illustrations of all parts are shown actual size with the exception of balance staffs which are shown five times actual size.
Following the list of material will be found Mainspring Chart and Hairspring Chart showing use and strength of springs; Timing Screw Chart showing value in seconds per hour for the various weights and Tap Size Chart showing tap numbers, drill sizes, tap sizes, number of threads per inch, etc.
In addition will be found a chart for decimal equivalents of millimeters and inch. This is intended for the convenience of jewelers desiring to transpose metric and inch and we hope will be found a great time saver.
H o w To Order Mate-rial From This Catalog
T IS FIRST necessary to determine the size, model and grade number of the Watch for which y o u desire to order material.
Turn to page 5 of the catalog where you will find all models illustrated. By comparing the watch in question with these illustrations you can quickly determine its size and model number. Underneath the illustration of each model you will find reference to the number of the'pages on which all material for that model is listed and priced.
For example: Suppose that y o u wish a balance staff for a certain South Bend Watch and that on comparing this watch with the illustrations on page 5 you find it to be a 16 size, model 2; and the grade number stamped upon the bridges is 229.
The illustration for this model refers us to pages 66 to 81 where we find the material listed alphabetically, Simply turn through these pages until you come.totheletterS. Herewe find “Staff,Balance”andfollowingit acrossto the columns in which the prices appear, we find under the heading for grades 223 and 229, the dozen price in heavy figures and the piece price in light figures. At the left of the description you will find the catalog number of the part to use in ordering.
Observe foot notes u p o n page from which y o u are selecting material.
When a part is listed under different models, with the same part number but with a different name, the dimensions are the same and the piece is inter‐ changeable in either model.
Pricesdo not include fi t t i n g of material unless so stated.
When “upper” is used in connection with a part name it has reference to the bridge side of the movement. When “lower” is used it refers to the dial side or lower plate side.
The names “Pallet Bridge” and “Pallet Cock” are both used in this catalog. The term “Pallet Cock” is used in connection with the 0, 6 and 16 size old models, one screw only being used to fasten it to the lower plate. The term “Pallet Bridge” is used in connection with the late models, as it spans the Pallet Arbor and is fastened to the Lower Plate with two screws.
If the jobber from whom you purchase material does not carry the material you wish in stock, we will see that you are supplied.
When sending a complete watch for repairs, we recommend that it be sent by express. If sent by mail, there is greater danger of its being damaged. Watches w i l l be returned by expressunless otherwise instructed. If watches are returned by mail, it is at your own risk.

recommend the use of a cheaper Spring when replacing this Spring; but, for those who insist on a cheaper Spring, it w i l l be furnished at $1.25 p e r dozen.
All material for this model is interchangeable except where designated as “O. F. only” or “Htg. only."
QUALITY IN MAINSPRINGS
The springs used in South Bend Watches and listed on this page we have prowed to be the best that money can buy. They possess unusual resilience and rarely set. They cost a trifle more than an inferior spring but we supply them in these watches because we kno-w they insure superior timekeeping.
It will pay you to use them for the same reason. Use only the high grade spring and increase the reputation of y o u r repair department for dependable service.

A thousandth part of an inch is the greatest wariation allowed in the measure‐ ment of many South Bend watch parts and in some cases one ten-thousandth of an inch is the standard.
This emphasizes the folly of trying to repair these watches with substitute material of any kind. It is absolutely necessary to use genuine South Bend mate‘rial‘ in order to get best results.
The sealed South Bend package, cut of which is shown elsewhere in this catalog, insures you against substitution; and our method of listing material is a further safeguard in getting the exact duplicate of the part to be replaced.
In some instances more than one number is applied to the same part name or illustration. This indicates a difference in grade or finish. should a n y difference occur in dimensions which cannot be shown it is explained with description following catalog number.

Every up-to-date watch repair department should carry a reasonably complete assortment of those watch parts most frequently used. The in-veslmrnt necessary to do this is not large and it is a big advantage to be able to give your customers prompt servite instead of being forced to ask thrm to wait until you can send for the needed part.

QUALITY IN MAINSPRINGS
The springs used in South BendWatches we have proved to be the best that money can buy. They possess unusual resilience and rarely set. They cost a trifle more than an inferior spring but we sup‐ ply them in these watches because we know they insure superior timekeeping.
' It will pay you to use them. for the same reason. Use only the high grade spring and increase the reputation of your repair department for dependable service.

CHART OF SOUTH BEND TIMING SCREWS Showing Weight, Prices and Instructions for Their Use
This Company, desirous of co-operating with the Jeweler in maintaining the high standard time keeping qualities of South Bend Watches, is here listing, charts f o r 0‐12-16 and 18 size gold and gilded timing screws, intended to assist the watchmaker when replacing the hairspring to bring the watch to time within the limits of the regulator.
Good results can be obtained without the use of screw scales by first testing with a pair of timing screws of a known time value. After placing the regulator in the center of the index, run the move‐ ment one hour. If it is found that it gains a certain number of seconds, remove the two timing screws directly opposite each other which are the first screws next to meantime screws and balance arms. A pair of timing screws should then be selected, which you think are of suitable weight to overcome the error, and placed in balance where other screws were removed.
This should bring the movement to time or within the limits of the regulator which is approxi‐ mately 200 seconds per day. If after running the movement again it is found that it loses, remove timing screws which were placed in balance and replace with another pair, the weight of which should be the weight of the pair removed with the amount the watch lost deducted; for examplez‐If after selectingthefirstpairoftimingscrews(weight75seconds)andrunningwatch1hourthereisanet loss of 20 seconds; remove 75 second timing screws and replace with another pair marked 55 sec‐ onds. Or, if after running watch one hour with 75 second screws there is a net gain of 20 seconds, then replace 75 second screws w i t h 95 second screws.
The various weights of timing screws are indicated by numbers which specify their time value in seconds per hour. They may be purchased in pairs, each pair is placed in a separate container and labeled with the number which indicates their time value. Order by catalog number and specify weights desired.
