Note: The Elgin Grade 371 hunting case pocket watch WAS
a railroad grade watch. At the time of its
production, railroads were still approving hunting
case watches for time service. Ref:
https://mb.nawcc.org/wiki/Railroad-Watch "Neither
Ball, nor the CB&Q (or other roads) specifically
prohibited hunting-case watches until the 1920s,
or much later on some roads. Except for those
hunting-case movements mounted in open-face cases
with conversion dials (as alluded to above),
hunting-case watches aren't mentioned in 1908 -
1920s (or later on some roads) rules documents. "
It's a common mistake to assume that the rules of
time service that later prohibited hunting case
watches from time service, but that wasn't the
case when this watch was made, approximately 1910

Adjusted to 5 positions, 19 jewels, Lever set.
Thanx
Curator Response: This watch is hunting style, which generally would not have been approved on many railroads during the estimated time of production, c.1910.

Note: Both the Erhardt & Meggers Railroad guide book and
the Townsend RR guide book list the BWR grade 371
as being RR approved.
Curator Response: Starting in 1908, a few years before the estimated production of this watch, railraod inspectors began requiring all new watches to be openface style, not hunting. Therefore, this watch would not have qualified for service on many railroads at the time. That said, the production year is simply an estimate, and in fact, this watch may have been manufactured slightly earlier.
