Railroad Service

Grade No. 936, an open face, 17-jewel, adjusted
to 5 positions, lever set movement, was the first
watch made under the Hamilton name. It was
manufactured to meet railroad standards,
introduced in 1893, and continued to be
manufactured until 1915. Originally designed with
a single-roller escapement, it was upgraded to
double-roller escapement around 1906. Grade No.
937, a hunting case, 17-jewel, adjusted to 5

in 1893, manufactured until 1914, for those who
preferred a hunting case watch.

Hamilton Grade No. 940, mfg. 1902Grade No. 940,
an open face, 21-jewel, adjusted to 5 positions,
lever-set movement was Hamilton's most popular
18-size movement, produced from 1898 to 1928, over
209,000 of the movements were manufactured. During
the 30 years of production the movements
manufactured evolved, including an upgraded
escapement from single-roller to double-roller
around 1906, and an upgraded mainspring barrel
from a going barrel to a motor barrel around 1908.
Grade No. 941 was the corresponding 21-jewel,
hunting case version, available from 1898 to 1920
was also popular with a little over 26,000
movements manufactured.

Other 18-size pocket watch movements manufactured
to meet railroad time service requirements
included:

positions, D.R. mfg. 1904-1921,

Curator Response: Thanks for the report. However, due to the hunting configuration, the Grade 941 would not have qualified for railroad service at the time or production (c.1911-1912). If you have an original source or advertisement from this period that offers the 941 as a railroad watch, please feel free to reach out.

Note: This is a LEVER SET RAILROAD GRADE Pocket watch
Curator Response: Thanks for the report. The Hamilton 941 was a hunting movement. Since this run is estimated to have been manufactured in 1911, when open face watches were required on most American railroads, it is not considered to be railroad grade. Earlier 941 watches would have met the requirements at the time of production.
