The Fidelity Watch Case Company was incorporated in 1888 by Charles Schwitter to "succeed to and enlarge the business formaerly carried on by [him]." Mr. Schwitter, A.G. Funck, and Eugene Martins were the incorporators with a capital of $125,000. [JC, March 1888]
In 1889, the company moved their office into the Corbin Building at 192 Broadway in New York City.
The company went out of business in 1896 after the death of A.G. Funck in March 1896. Schwitter bought out the interest of the other shareholders to consolidate the financial position. Then, the company assets were sold at auction to liquidate the company.
In September 1896, the factory equipment and machinery was sold at auction: "60 horse power engine and boiler, main shafting and pulleys, machinery used in the manufacture of watch cases." [The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Sept. 22, 1896] M. Straus purchased a large stock of remaining inventory of gold cases and subsequently advertised them in local papers.
Some reports indicate that the business was sold by Schwitter to the Camm Watch Case Company around 1900. However, no evidence of this has been found.
Charles Schwitter continued in the case business at a limited capicity following the closure of the Fidelity Watch Company. Schwitter died in 1905.
