Research Notes
The Grade 93 was one of the most popular grades produced by the Rockford Watch Company. The 9-Jewel Gilt movement was positioned at the low-end of the market compared to the full product line. This created an affordable option that was easy to sell as an everyday-carry watch. In the 1896 A.C. Becken catalog, the Grade 93 could be purchased for $9.50, compared to $50.00 for the elite grades No. 80 and No. 60. In addition to the seven standard jewels in the balance and escapement, the Grade 93 movements feature screw-set jeweling on upper third and fourth wheels. Though uncommon, various movements recorded with micrometric regulators.
Anomalies:
Multiple movements consistent with the Grade 82 have been observed in the last run of Grade 93 movements [440,001-441,000]. These movements feature nickel plates marked "17 J" and "Adjusted," drastically different than the 9-Jewel Gilt Grade 93. Currently, observations have been isolated to the last 400 movements from this run. As a result, it is unclear if Grade 93 movements exist earlier in the run, and this would affect the estimate total production of the Grade 93 and Grade 82.
