Crescent Nickel
Based on original catalogs, Crescent introduced its nickel case around 1893, mostly offered in the swing-out design patented by Ezra Fitch in 1879 at Waltham. While other companies created marketable names for nickel alloy cases, such as "silverode" or "silveroid," the Crescent Watch Case Company simply sold theirs as "nickel" cases.
From correlating surviving examples, it appears that the company began marking their cases with "Patented" with "Trade Mark" and the crescent moon and star as soon as production began, closely resembling the illustration included in the trademark application for the mark. The early marks were stamped heavily, with a smaller star directly above the "DE" and the moon pointing off towards the 9:00 position. Around 1896, the mark was slightly modified with a larger star. Around 1900, the mark was modified to one that features the larger star and the lower tip of a much-thinner moon nearly touches the "A" in "Trade Mark." Around 1907, the word “Patented” was dropped from the mark, leaving only the crescent moon and star between the words “Trade Mark.” (It is possible that this change occurred as early as c.1899).
The “Patent [Crescent Moon and Star] Trade Mark” and “[Crescent Moon and Star] Trade Mark” marks were exclusively used on the nickel cases offered by the company, with the majority being the swing-ring style and a smaller number of screw back-and-bezel cases.
